<description>Students' needs in a Learning E.S.P. : Case study ; 2nd year computer science LMD students Chlef University.
MEHDI, Tayeb
The purpose of this case study is to identify the needs of the second year Computer Science LMD students in learning English for specific purposes in the department of computing at Hassiba Benbouali University, Chlef. The participants were a group of 41 students and their teachers of English for the academic year 2010-2011.To collect data the researcher used a participant observation and two questionnaires; the first one was meant for the teacher whereas the second was administered to the 2nd year LMD students. The findings brought out an overall identification of the students‘ needs with positive opinions of all two groups on the needs of using the specific English courses designed for computing students in their department, as well as the four macro-English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) that are greatly needed. The findings also reinforced the importance of implementing this need analysis as an important stage to design a course later that would fit those needs and suggestions provided by the teacher and the students. Therefore, more English courses specially designed to suit the students‘ needs are recommended in future curriculum development. The dissertation develops in four chapters

<description>Students attitudes towards computer assisted English Learning : Case study ; 2nd year computer science LMD students Chlef University.
MEHARET, Sarah
It is a fact that the use of computers becomes a revolution in the history of human life in all aspects, and the process of language learning and teaching could not be exempted from this. Many institutions around the world have integrated computer-assisted language learning (CALL) into their curricula. This paper aims to investigate the students’ attitudes towards the integration of computer in English for Specific Purposes class. A questionnaire is used to collect data from the 2nd year LMD students from the department of Computing in the University of Chlef, who participated in this study. The findings of the study revealed that students have positive attitudes towards CALL and towards English in general.

<description>Specificities of scientific texts' reading in the secondary school. : The case of third secondary school students in mediouna lycée/ Relizane.
HANIFI, Aissa
Most secondary school EFL teachers in Algeria claim that their students encounter real difficulties to understand scientific texts inserted in their English textbook. This study has attempted to investigate the major factors that influence the scientific texts’ reading task and hinder the third year secondary school students’ ability to understand such type of texts. These factors incorporate mainly some English scientific text features, actual psychological handicaps that prevent students from having an easy access to scientific texts comprehension and major current teaching methods and conceptions as being applied by the English teacher with English scientific texts. To fulfil this aim, this research work approaches a systematic analysis based on theory and practice arranged into four chapters. Chapter one provides a description of the current learning situation of the target group of students and some of its related issues. Besides, it incorporates a brief explanation of the research tools used in the methodology of the thesis. Chapter two is dedicated to shed light on the major concepts related to English for Specific Purposes’ discourse and to the reading comprehension task of general English as a whole. This chapter ends up with the presentation of some specificities characterising reading English scientific texts which create problems and difficulties for secondary school students in particular. Chapter three represents the field work of the study. It includes the data analysis of the research tools which incorporate two different questionnaires addressed to the teachers and to the students respectively and an observation sheet. Chapter four is devoted to suggest some of the reading strategies that could help the“terminale” students overcome the problems they usually encounter when they read English scientific texts. Such strategies, of course, are the outcome of some prominent studies carried out by specialists in the field of EST teaching .The aim of incorporating such reading strategies is to facilitate the reading task of the English scientific texts to the EFL learners in general and to the secondary school students in particular.

<title>Pupils' difficulties in writing on scientific topics. : The case of third year ain merane secondary school pupils, Chlef.</title>

<description>Pupils' difficulties in writing on scientific topics. : The case of third year ain merane secondary school pupils, Chlef.
BOUGUENOUS, Abdallah
No one can deny the fact that writing is not an easy task, and dealing with scientific topics makes it more difficult. The reality shows that the ''terminal'' pupil is unable to write meaningful coherent paragraphs and essays on scientific subjects. Certainly, there are some factors which refrain pupils from expressing their ideas freely and easily in a written form. In this respect, the primary purpose of the present work is to reveal the reasons behind the pupils‟ difficulties in writing on scientific topics. Working with thirty secondary school pupils and ten teachers by submitting questionnaires and a writing test, the findings indicate that “terminal” pupils fail to write successfully on scientific matters due to the following reasons: The lack of motivation and self confidence of both teachers and pupils, the need to master the different mechanics of language like grammar, spelling and punctuation, the teacher‟s role which is not motivating and the lack of the necessary scientific knowledge to generate ideas about scientific subjects. The present thesis consists of four chapters: The first one deals with the methodology design and the learning situation where much discussion is devoted to tackle the situation of teaching English in Algeria and the different writing tasks assigned for secondary school pupils. It also exposes the major pupils‟ deficiencies in writing. The second chapter reviews the related literature into two main parts; the first one is concerned with describing writing and all that may have a relationship with the writing pedagogy. The second one deals with science writing, its characteristics and the different mechanics of language needed for efficient writing on scientific issuers. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the tools used in the investigation starting by devoting two questionnaires, one for pupils and one for teachers, and ending with a writing test for pupils to reveal their deficiencies in writing about science. The last chapter is devoted to suggest some solutions and recommendations to overcome the problem.
