Abstract

In recent years, many Algerian cities have witnessed rapid urban expansion, which has led to noticeable imbalances in urban organization—particularly in the deterioration of the environmental framework caused by the growing problem of municipal solid waste, poor management practices, and the lack of up-to-date databases to support decision-making and guide public policies in this field. In this context, there is an urgent need to adopt modern approaches to municipal solid waste management, based on principles of sustainability and coordination among various local actors. Although Théniet El Had, a municipality in the Wilaya of Tissemsilt, is considered medium in size, it faces similar challenges, especially within Sector 3, which serves as the case study area for this research. This study provides a detailed diagnosis of the current waste management practices in Sector 3, highlighting the reliance on traditional, costly, and inefficient methods. It advocates for the integration of modern technologies, particularly Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as essential tools to enhance waste collection, tracking, spatial distribution of containers, and forward-looking planning. The findings demonstrate that integrating technology into waste management in medium-sized municipalities can significantly improve urban performance—not only through spatial visualization, but also by providing analytical support that empowers decision-makers to implement smarter, more sustainable, and effective solutions.
