Abstract
The purpose of this case study is to identify the needs of the second year Computer Science LMD students in learning English for specific purposes in the department of computing at Hassiba Benbouali University, Chlef. The participants were a group of 41 students and their teachers of English for the academic year 2010-2011.To collect data the researcher used a participant observation and two questionnaires; the first one was meant for the teacher whereas the second was administered to the 2nd year LMD students. The findings brought out an overall identification of the students‘ needs with positive opinions of all two groups on the needs of using the specific English courses designed for computing students in their department, as well as the four macro-English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) that are greatly needed. The findings also reinforced the importance of implementing this need analysis as an important stage to design a course later that would fit those needs and suggestions provided by the teacher and the students. Therefore, more English courses specially designed to suit the students‘ needs are recommended in future curriculum development. The dissertation develops in four chapters
